How to Play Ping Pong

A game of fast reactions and skill, ping pong is one of the world’s most popular sports. The rules are simple and the equipment cheap, but the sport requires consistent practice to improve. For this reason, if you’re looking to start playing ping pong seriously you’ll want to look for clubs or leagues in your area. You’ll also want to invest in a set of ping pong balls and paddles. Regulation ping pong paddles are typically made of wood and rubber and come in a variety of colors, and they’re designed to allow players to impart various spins on the ball.

Ping pong can be played either on a single table with two opponents (doubles play) or with partners of opposite sex who serve alternately. The first player to reach 11 points wins the match. Points are awarded for hitting the ball to your opponent, or for making your opponent miss a return. The ball must bounce on your side of the table before you hit it, but obstructing the ball or “volleying” it is not allowed.

When you’re ready to begin, find a partner who is at or slightly above your level and is willing to play consistently. You’ll need to practice both the stance and the technique of serving, which is different than receiving. Beginners should try to serve diagonally, but it’s OK to serve anywhere when playing doubles. Then, work on the timing of the ball. You’ll want to consciously watch the ball from the moment it’s served until it hits your paddle, and you should listen for the sound of the ball as well.
