How to Play Ping Pong

The sport of ping pong, or table tennis as it is known in some countries, is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It was originally a recreational game played in bars and restaurants, but has now grown into a serious competition among professionals and amateurs alike. It is a fast-paced and highly strategic game where the ability to quickly change direction, spin the ball and hit with power are all important.

The ball used is usually celluloid or plastic and is orange or white, with a diameter of 40 mm. A net divides the table into two equal sides and is a few inches high. Players can play either singles or doubles and service alternates after every point (except when tied at 10-10, which is called deuce).

A ping pong paddle must be made of wood and rubber and competition paddles are two-colored with red and black sides. The stance of the player is referred to as a ready position, with feet relatively wide apart, knees bent, body hunched down, and arms held out in front of them, in a balanced position.

Practice consistently and focus on developing good technique. A key is to be able to spot your opponent’s “power zone” — the area where they hit the ball with the most speed and strength. To do this, watch your opponent closely and think about how you could spin the ball to disrupt their grip or throw it on a different trajectory.
