From community centres, to workplaces and even to your own home, ping pong is a game that is enjoyed by players of all ages. Whether you’re playing for fun or aiming to compete in tournaments, becoming a great player takes serious dedication and practice. It is often said that it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill, and although this is a little overstated it is true that consistency is key. Even if you can only play a few times a week for 30 minutes, this is still valuable as you will improve and develop your game over time.
Historically, people used champagne corks or golf balls as a ball, cigar boxes as nets and rows of books as a paddle, but it was not until 1901 that the name ping-pong was officially trademarked by the British game company J. Jaques and Son Ltd, though it was already in widespread use by Hamley’s of Regent Street in London at the time. The term was also in common usage in other parts of the world, particularly where the game had become very popular such as China and Japan.
Today, ping pong is played in a variety of settings from homes and clubs to professional sports arenas, and the sport has grown into one of the most popular games worldwide. There are a number of strict USATT and ITTF rules that must be followed to ensure a fair game.
At the lower end of the spectrum, ping-pong is a social activity enjoyed by friends or co-workers while at the higher level it is played in competitions and can be highly competitive.
